Karan Dhingra / House Of TUNEMAN

Write a short paragraph about your release.
ROVER was created to blend ethnic sounds from various cultures, inspired by a solo traveler’s mindset. The EP reflects the traveler’s journey through diverse experiences, weaving them into an imaginary world. Each track has a distinct energy, with Moon Chaser combining Indian vocals and instruments like the ghatam, bansuri, tabla, and Swiss handpan with Afro elements. The second track, Maneye, is a groovy Afro house track layered with Afro percussions and strong vocals, designed to energize the dance floor.

What is your connection with Cafe De Anatolia?
Cafe De Anatolia’s sound has always been a reference for me, both as a listener and a producer/DJ. When they decided to feature my work on their label, it felt like years of hard work finally paid off. I’ve followed their journey from the beginning, and their contribution to the industry is priceless.

What initially sparked your passion for music, and how did you decide to pursue a career in the industry?
I’ve always loved deep electronica and rhythmic 4×4 grooves, but I never considered music as a career. Initially, I created playlists and home-recorded sets for friends and local lounges without any monetary motivation, as I was already involved in my tailoring accessories business. However, after receiving offers to perform live, I decided to learn DJing and production. When my independent releases gained recognition, I realized I could make a career out of it.

Can you share a memorable moment from your music career that made a significant impact on your artistic journey?
My release Bombay Bustle marked a significant turning point in my career. It became a hit with the Indian audience and DJs worldwide. The track, a fusion of Indo-Afro tech house, gained media attention, was aired on VH1, and opened doors for me to perform alongside artists like Korolova and Jad Halal.

As an artist, how do you approach the creative process?
I’m deeply influenced by ethnic sounds, and my creative process usually starts with a blank slate. I often work on multiple tracks at once, switching between them depending on my mood. Sometimes, I sit with a track for months or even years to ensure that I still like it before deciding to release it.

What do you believe sets your music apart from others in the industry?
I experiment by blending sounds from different cultures in a single track. These experiments are challenging, as mixing distinct cultural elements takes time. However, the results have been satisfying, and the audience has responded well to my music.

How do you handle challenges or setbacks in your music career?
Breaking into the industry at 33, without a musical background or connections, was not easy. I didn’t know anyone, but I stayed consistent and focused. I learned to take action without overthinking, and with time and effort, results followed.

Collaboration is a crucial aspect of the music world. Have you collaborated with other artists?
Yes, I’ve started collaborating with regional instrumentalists and folk artists. They bring fresh, unique flavors to my usual sound, and I’m excited to continue exploring these collaborations.

How do you leverage digital platforms and social media to connect with your fans?
Social media has played a critical role in my career, especially as an independent artist. While I’m not a social media expert, it has provided a platform to share my music with a wider audience.

What’s your favorite part of being a musician?
The connection I’ve built with my audience brings me the most joy. The love and respect I receive from fans, whether through DJ sets or streaming platforms, make all the effort worthwhile.

How do live performances help you connect with your audience?
Live performances are essential for connecting with fans. While people might enjoy a track online, it’s the energy and personal connection you create during a performance that turns listeners into dedicated fans.

How do you stay motivated to continue creating music?
My love for music keeps me going, even when inspiration is hard to find. Music brings me peace and sanity, especially during tough times.

What is the most significant change in the music industry in recent years, and how have you adapted to it?
The rise of social media and streaming platforms has given independent artists a fighting chance. While I’m not a social media expert, I’ve focused on releasing quality music, which I believe increases my chances of success.
