Gabriel Robella
Introduction
I grew up in a family of musicians—my father was a guitarist, and my grandfather played the saxophone. Music surrounded me from a young age. I initially pursued rock and pop bands but eventually shifted to electronic music, inspired by bands like Depeche Mode, New Order, and Pet Shop Boys. Collecting vinyl and DJing at clubs opened doors, and a promoter offered me my first professional gig. From there, my passion turned into a career.
Inspiration for Electronic Music
My South American experiences deeply influenced my love for tribal music. I was drawn to the fusion of progressive and tribal house, inspired by artists like Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish, and Armand Van Helden. Over time, I honed my sound and expanded my reach, performing across Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Colombia. Relocating to Miami in 2003, I began producing for international labels.
Style & Sound
With the resurgence of tribal house, now recognized as afro-house, I returned to my roots. My latest track, “Close to Heaven” with Kenon Chen, combines percussive elements, soft synths, and deep basslines. His vocals brought the track to life, and Cafe De Anatolia signed it almost immediately. My signature sound blends progressive house with afro-house, ensuring a dynamic and emotive experience for listeners.
About “Close to Heaven”
The moment I heard Kenon’s voice and lyrics, I felt an instant connection. The track embodies emotions of love and reunion, carrying the message that we will one day be close to our loved ones again. It’s a heartfelt and uplifting composition, perfect for both radio and outdoor events. The production process was seamless—crafted in one night, refined over the following days, and finalized for release on February 12.
Evolution in Music
Previously, I focused on instrumental, underground tracks. Today, collaborating with vocalists has strengthened my connection with audiences. Vocals add depth, making songs more memorable and impactful. Working with singers has broadened my creative approach and allowed my music to resonate beyond clubs and events.
Challenges in the Industry
Breaking through in the electronic music scene requires more than talent—it demands technical skills in mixing, mastering, and promotion. Signing with a label like Cafe De Anatolia is crucial. They understand the music and have a rich history, with founders Monika, Nikola, and Zoran Iliev (aka Billy Esteban) shaping its vision. Their support made a significant impact on my journey.
Role of Labels & Collaborations
Performing live allows me to test new music and connect with audiences. Collaborations, like my work with Kenon Chen, expand reach and creativity. Cafe De Anatolia’s eight-year legacy provides invaluable expertise, and I’m thrilled to have four tracks signed with them, including “Savannah Roots” and “Numero Uno.”
Advice for Aspiring Artists
Create music for yourself first. Ask if it’s a track you’d play in your set. Compare it to what you love, refine it, and don’t rush the process. Quality matters more than quantity. As a DJ, your role is to entertain and connect with people, ensuring they have an unforgettable experience.
Looking Ahead
Though I’ve balanced music with my acting career (Netflix’s Cobra Kai, Snow White), I’m excited about upcoming releases. I’m working on progressive and afro-house projects, including new tracks for Cafe De Anatolia and possible collaborations with Kenon Chen. Stay tuned for fresh sounds in 2025!
