Tiësto may be preparing to give one of dance music’s most recognisable labels a new identity.
The Dutch superstar has revealed that he is considering changing the name of Musical Freedom to Prismatic Records, potentially marking a new chapter for the imprint as his own sound continues to move back toward trance and a broader, more eclectic electronic palette.
The idea emerged during a new interview with beFesti, where Tiësto discussed the relationship between his current musical direction and the identity of his label.
“Musical Freedom has some kind of reputation that it’s just EDM, which it’s not,” Tiësto explained, introducing Prismatic as a name that better represents the range of influences found throughout his DJ sets.
Why Tiësto Is Considering the Change
For Tiësto, the proposed name is more than a branding exercise.
The producer explained that his sets have become increasingly varied, bringing together different electronic styles and influences rather than remaining confined to the EDM identity that became closely associated with Musical Freedom.
“Prismatic” has already become a recurring part of Tiësto’s current musical world. His Prismatic radio show and live concept both reflect the broader direction, while his recent sets have increasingly incorporated trance classics, contemporary trance productions and records from across the electronic spectrum.
A potential rebrand would therefore bring his label identity into closer alignment with the sound and aesthetic he is currently developing.
From Musical Freedom to Prismatic
Founded in 2009, Musical Freedom became one of the defining labels of the EDM boom and an important platform for Tiësto’s evolution during the genre’s global expansion.
Over the years, the imprint has released music from a wide range of major electronic artists while becoming closely associated with the festival-driven sound that dominated dance music during the 2010s.
The label is still active, with releases continuing under the Musical Freedom name in September 2026. A change to Prismatic would therefore represent a significant transition rather than simply the launch of another Tiësto project.
The proposed identity could also allow the label to move beyond the stylistic expectations that have surrounded Musical Freedom for years.
A Return to Tiësto’s Trance Roots
The potential rebrand arrives during a period in which Tiësto has been reconnecting more visibly with the trance sounds that defined his early career.
Before Musical Freedom, Tiësto was deeply involved with Black Hole Recordings, the influential Dutch label he co-founded with Arny Bink. The imprint became synonymous with the evolution of trance during the late 1990s and early 2000s, including Tiësto’s In My Memory era and the celebrated In Search of Sunrise series.
His current Prismatic concept has increasingly brought elements of that musical history back into focus.
Recent performances have further highlighted the shift, with Tiësto incorporating classic and contemporary trance material into extended sets. His Creamfields 2026 performance, for example, featured records connected to the genre’s history alongside newer productions and his own recent material.
Tiësto Is Putting the Decision to His Fans
Despite the growing presence of the Prismatic identity, the label has not officially been renamed.
Instead, Tiësto appears to be leaving the decision open and has invited his audience to weigh in on whether Prismatic Records should replace Musical Freedom.
That makes the proposed rebrand particularly interesting. Rather than quietly introducing a new label identity, Tiësto is effectively turning the next chapter of his long-running imprint into a conversation with his audience.
Whether Musical Freedom ultimately becomes Prismatic Records remains to be seen.
What is already clear is that Tiësto’s current era is moving beyond the straightforward EDM branding that once defined his mainstream identity. With Prismatic increasingly appearing across his radio show, live concept and musical direction, the name could soon become much more than a theme.
For now, Musical Freedom remains Musical Freedom. But Tiësto has made it clear that the prism is on the table.
